Welcome to the second episode of our conversation series, “Scuba Chatter.” PADI Master Instructor Petr Barak takes on the role of moderator as he interviews Maik Eichhorn from Meissen, Germany. Maik completed his IDC in July 2024 under the guidance of our Course Director, Jurek Majkowski. In this episode, you’ll learn how Maik got into diving and what ultimately inspired him to turn his hobby into a profession. He shares the challenges he faced along the way, what he finds most fulfilling about being an instructor, and his advice for anyone considering a similar career.Get ready to be inspired by the story of someone for whom diving became not just a job, but a lifelong journey.
“Professional diving led me to the path I had been searching for.”
Maik: Over the past 20 years, I’ve changed jobs several times, but I was never satisfied with working just to make a living. Whether it was in an office, out in all kinds of weather on construction sites, or working night shifts in a warehouse driving a forklift, none of it truly fulfilled me. I stumbled upon diving completely by chance while working as a craftsman at a small German dive base. I ended up staying there for a while as a volunteer, and that’s also when I first met Jurek, who was training a good friend of mine. He struck me as a very approachable, patient, and competent person.
A year later, I came across an ad from the Canary Islands looking for candidates to become PADI professionals, with the promise of future job opportunities. I sold or gave away what I didn’t need and bought a plane ticket. However, the dive center had to close down, and I returned to Germany with the plan to complete my Divemaster course. After that, I signed up for the IDC with Jurek and his academy.
Maik: Jurek has vast experience and knows how to pass it on. I learned a lot about diving theory and PADI standards, which are essential in an instructor’s work. What was incredibly valuable to me were the small tips and real-life examples from Jurek’s practice, which prepared us for various situations and ensured safety during training. The Rescue exercises were also a huge help, as shortly after the IDC, I led my first Rescue course, and they gave me a solid sense of confidence and drive.
"PADI Course Director Jurek Majkowski struck me as a very patient, experienced, and competent person."
Maik: It wasn’t difficult at all. It was exactly as I had imagined, and it was amazing! Every day, sunshine, the sea, diving, and more diving. 🙂.
As an instructor, it brings me immense joy to inspire others to take up this sport, teach new divers, or offer them unforgettable experiences. Simply put, it’s something amazing. Greece is an attractive destination not only because of the sunshine and beautiful landscape but also for its great food, beaches, and warm waters. Underwater, it’s no less fascinating – rich fauna and flora, stunning rock formations, wrecks, and perfect visibility.
Maik: The IDC was my way to achieve my goal of becoming an instructor. The quality of the training obviously plays an important role, but I also think it’s crucial how much enthusiasm Jurek put into teaching me. Only someone who teaches with passion can pass that enthusiasm on to others. Jurek’s network of contacts was also a huge help, and through it, I got my first career opportunity.
"Greece offers not only beautiful dives but also an amazing lifestyle."
"Anyone considering the IDC should go for it. I haven’t regretted my decision for a second."
Petr: What are your plans for the future, and where do you want to take your career? Are there any specific places you plan to dive in?
Maik: I’m drawn to many diving locations around the world. I want to get more involved in environmental protection projects, like those with organizations such as Sea Shepherd, who are doing great things. Of course, I also want to continue growing and improving as a PADI dive instructor. I’m still very much attracted to the Canary Islands. I would love to stay there with my girlfriend, whom I’ve inspired to dive, and continue my career as a PADI professional.
Maik: Definitely go for it! If you’re thinking about it, don’t delay. I haven’t regretted my decision for a second.
